100 Beginner Running Tips

The Complete Running Blog Network has compiled a list of helpful tips for beginner and even veteran runners.  The list includes helpful pieces of advice of different aspects of running including: Apparel , Manners, Motivation , Nutrition, Prevention, Safety, Racing Tips, Shoes, Training and Weather Tips.

Some of my personal favorites include:

Apparel
  • Wear spandex shorts under your regular running shorts so you don’t chafe “down there.”
  • Cotton socks will only lead to blisters; invest in socks designed for running.
Manners
  • Always try to balance running with the people you love by making a schedule that involves and is considerate of everyone.
Motivation
  • Find a committed running partner. It is much harder to skip a run when you have someone else depending on you.
Nutrition
  • Hydrate. Make it a habit to drink water throughout the day.
  • To aid recovery the most crucial time to eat and drink is in the hour immediately after you run.
Protection
  • Use Vaseline or BodyGlide wherever things rub. They will help prevent blisters and chafing (guys don’t forget the nipples).
  • Don’t stretch before a run. Warm up by walking briskly or jogging slowly for several minutes.
Racing Tips
  • Race day is not the day to try new shoes, eat new foods, or wear brand new clothing.
  • Do not try a marathon as your first race.
Shoe Tips
  • Try shoes on in the afternoon when your feet are bigger.
  • Doubleknot your shoe laces so they will not come undone when you run.
Training Tips
  • If you are breathing too hard slow down or walk a bit until you feel comfortable again.
  • There’s no shame in walking.

Fitness-related News: Forget prizes, just run; Bitbit's Triathlon Dream; and Rochelle Tan's Ironman Bid in Jeopardy

Forget prizes, just run
Run for Sight Foundation’s Dr. Peter Mancao, a veteran runner who has joined the New York Marathon, said some people have forgotten the main purpose of running, which is to adapt a healthy lifestyle.
“The main reason why we introduced running is to encourage people to run, give them an avenue to do a road run every Sunday so that they can compare their performance every weekend,” said Mancao.
“Karon nag focus na ang mga tawo sa cash prize and usahay mureklamo pa gyud ngano gamay ra,” he said.

 Trauma hampers Bitbit’s triathlon dream
Former Southeast Asian Games mountainbike gold medalist turned duathlete Marites Bitbit is still fighting over her swimming phobia after her near-drowning experience more than 30 years ago in a lake in Baguio City.
The childhood experience hinders her interest to join the 2012 2nd Sogod Mayor Moonyeen Durano Triahtlon Cup this Saturday at the Alegre Beach Resort,Sogod,Cebu.

Banning Kenyans from Local Runs a Form of Discrimination?

Original articles written by Cheska D. Geli
The ban, introduced mostly in races handled by Joel Baring, started in the Integrity Run early this year and was also enforced in the Mapfre Run and this month’s the Sonshine Radio Half Marathon.
Race organizers who proposed this policy said they want to help the local runners who rely on running as a source of income.
“Wala may discrimination kay makajoin man sila pero dili sila entitled sa prizes kay we want to give chance to local runners. It’s only a fun run ra man sad. If dagko na runs kay we will put a separate category for them,” said Joel Baring.
But the Kenyans, some of who are already based in Cebu. believed otherwise and said it’s a form of discrimination.
“Yes we feel it, I can imagine if that also happens in Kenya (against Filipinos), they will feel bad. Everywhere, discrimination is not good at all,” he said.
He also denied the allegation that they can’t be beaten by local runners. In fact, he was beaten by Filipinos in the last Philippine National Games in Dumaguete. Kiptanui was beaten in the 10,000-meter run by Julius Sermona and by Eduardo Buenavista in the 5,000-meter run.

In February 13, 2012, veteran runner Dr. Yong Larrazabal III, who has organized races in Cebu City, said that limiting Kenyans from joining races is a form of discrimination.
“Lisod man gud mudiscriminate against them. I’ve been to different races in the world and it’s all open to everyone,” said Larrazabal, who organized the SM2SM Run last Sunday.
Instead of barring the foreigner runners, Larrazabal suggested that the best possible solution for this is to put up more categories and more prizes or to give incentives to the best Filipino finisher.
“I think there can be ways where we can find a solution to the problem even without discriminating these foreign runners,” said Larrazabal.

Do you think Kenyans should be banned from local runs? Or is this a form of discrimination?

Milo Marathon National Finals or Prycegas International Marathon?

This year, two major races are going to be held one week apart from each other: the Milo Marathon National Finals in Manila on December 2, 2012 and the Prycegas International Marathon in Cagayan de Oro on December 9, 2012.

Milo Marathon has been a staple major race in the country and this year, the organizer have included a special category for locals to prevent stronger foreign runners from garnering all the major awards.  The top finisher for the Open category will receive P300,000, the second placer, P250,000 and the third placer P200,000. The Local category champion will bag P50,000.

Meanwhile, Prycegas has also offered good options for runners with attractive cash prizes that is said to amount to P1 million for top finishers in 42K (P100,000), 21K (P60,000) and 5K (P20,000) distances. The rest of the Top 10 finishers for each of the categories will also receive cash prizes.

Increased Fees Reason for Fewer Races in Cebu City?

Writer, John Pages, explores questions regarding the new running ordinance in Cebu that increased the permit fees from P1,800 to P7,000 for races with 10k distances and P15,000 for half-marathons.
"Since the new ordinance was implemented in February, fewer runs are being organized in Cebu City. Many have moved to Talisay or Lapu-Lapu or Mandaue.
While I agree with the one-race-a-day policy (though organizers can still hold simultaneous events in other cities), there are plenty of questions to ask:
Where does the P15,000 payment go? Does it help the run? Or does it help the city run these events?
This amount (for the 21K) excludes the thousands (for overtime pay) that must be paid to Citom. This amount, if I’m not mistaken, will not even go to the personnel of the Department of Public Services because, according to the new rule, the organizers themselves have to clean all the garbage.
No doubt this ordinance has plenty of good. But, four months after its implementation, it appears to have one bad outcome: fewer Cebu City races.
As an organizer/sponsor, why pay P15,000 when you can pay P500 for a Mandaue City-located run in Parkmall?"

Decline of Runs in Cebu City due to Running Ordinance

Races held in Cebu City have decreased in number due in part to the relatively new ordinance implemented which dictates a One-Race-a-Day Policy and an increase in permit fees from P1,800 to P7,000 for races with 10k distances and P15,000 for half-marathons.

From Sunstar Cebu:
Most of the runs held the previous months were outside Cebu City, including those that used to be staged here.
"Ang uban dagan naa gawas Cebu City kay mas barato man ang permit fee," said running coach Philip Duenas.
Last month, some municipalities in the province hosted races such as the Columbia Ecotrail Run in Carmen, Highlands Run in Argao and the Kawasan Falls Marathon in Badian.
Even those who organized annual runs moved to Mandaue like the Run for BB, which used to be in the Chong Hua Medical Arts Building, and the DYAB Kapamilya Run, which used to be in Cebu IT Park. Both transferred to Parkmall this year.
“Usually, the ones that can afford these rates are corporate-backed runs,” said Uytiepo.
